Shame is a dead end, but Love is a High Way!
Shame is a painful emotion that is rooted in these two lies “I am bad.” or ” I am inadequate.” According to the Bible neither of these concepts are true, yet many of us struggle with those beliefs. In many cases it is because there was someone in our life actively communicating shame over us. Some parents believe that if they can make you feel bad about how you behave then you will try harder to be good. They exposed your inadequacies and weaknesses to others. They compared you to your perfect siblings and kept you believing that there was something wrong with you. Putting shame on someone might seem to produce good results for a season but those results are not a true change in behaviour. They are just the actions of someone desperately trying to find acceptance and love by managing their behaviour. True Love is a higher way! Love covers a multitude of sins, it doesn’t expose them. Love lifts the head that is downcast with shame and looks deeply into it’s eyes to communicate value and worth. Love speaks the truth and believes the best. Love empowers others with the knowledge that they are loved because of who they are not because of what they do. Love is the higher way that Jesus entered earth on and it is the highway we must travel as well!
Father help us to learn to love the way you do! Father, I pray that your love would unravel the lies that shame spoke over us about who we are. We are not bad, in you we have been made righteous. We are not inadequate because through Christ, we can do all things. Forgive us for believing these lies and help us walk in your truth. Thank You, that you love us based on our identity as your sons and daughters, not based on our behaviour. In Jesus Name!
